The Unseen Powers Shaping Culture—and How Christ Disarmed Them

He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him” (Colossians 2:15)

“Rulers and authorities” denote spiritual powers that influence earthly realities, shape cultures, systems, human behaviour, and even governments. Although not all governments and human institutions are fully governed by these unseen forces, they are undoubtedly behind the entities that obstruct God’s plan for humanity.
An example is Uganda during Idi Amin’s reign (1971—1979). This ruthless dictator allegedly claimed to eat human flesh! While such extreme cruelty is uncommon, actions like murdering innocent civilians during military invasions, commodifying people, and cultural entertainment that secretly promotes harmful motives and values are typical of these leaders and authorities. The same ruthless spirit that fueled Idi Amin still persists today.
However, the glad news is that Christ has defeated them and disarmed them. As soldiers without weapons, they can not do any evil to those who are in Christ.
Christ's victory over these powers doesn't mean they are inactive or powerless. They continue to influence human behaviour and values. Believers in Christ need not fear them but should stay alert, evaluating each cultural value carefully before accepting it. They should also scrutinise all art and literature to determine whether it aligns with or opposes Kingdom principles. In today's age of pervasive social media, this is especially important—particularly because of the widespread assumption that everything shared online is truthful, honest, and beneficial. But that’s often not the case.
Discernment is vital in these dangerous times.
