Where is Christ in the Lord’s Supper?

The Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion or the Eucharist, is a central Christian sacrament commemorating Christ’s sacrifice. Yet, questions often arise regarding how Christ is present in this sacred meal. Understanding his presence in the Lord’s Supper involves exploring different theological perspectives while recognising that believers encounter him spiritually and relationally through this act of worship.

Christ as the Spiritual Host

In the Lord’s Supper, Christ is the spiritual host who invites believers to partake in the meal. He instituted the practice at the Last Supper, saying, “Do this in remembrance of me| (Luke 22:19). This command signifies that Christ himself is actively present whenever his followers gather to share the bread and wine. He invites participants to a sacred table where the elements serve as signs pointing to a deeper reality.
The spiritual presence of Christ means that he is not confined to the physical elements of bread and wine. Instead, his presence is experienced through faith. The apostle Paul’s teaching that the cup of blessing and the bread are a "participation in the blood and body of Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:16) indicates a spiritual communion that transcends the physical act. This view emphasises that believers profoundly meet Christ, spiritually nourished by the significance of the sacrifice remembered in the meal.

Commemoration and Sacrificial Presence

In the Lord’s Supper, Christ is present as the one who sacrificed himself for humanity's redemption. The meal commemorates his death and proclaims the new covenant established through his blood (1 Corinthians 11:25). Through the bread, symbolising his body, and the wine, symbolising his blood, participants remember his atoning work on the cross.

While different traditions interpret the nature of Christ’s presence in varying ways—such as the Roman Catholic understanding of transubstantiation or the Lutheran view of consubstantiation—all agree that the meal is a way of encountering the living Christ. The Reformed tradition, for example, emphasises that Christ is spiritually present, asserting that the Holy Spirit unites believers with Christ in the sacrament. Regardless of the theological nuance, remembering and proclaiming Christ’s sacrifice invites participants to encounter him personally and intimately.

Communion with Christ and the Church

The Lord’s Supper also signifies communion with Christ and the entire body of believers. As Christians partake together, they embody the unity of the Church as the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27). This collective act represents the shared faith and common hope found in Christ’s redemptive work.

Moreover, participating in the Lord’s Supper anticipates the future fulfilment of God’s kingdom. Jesus promised that he would drink the fruit of the vine anew in the kingdom of God (Matthew 26:29). This eschatological dimension of the sacrament reminds us that Christ's presence in the meal points forward to a time when all will be made new.
