A Christian's Guide to Environmental Stewardship

World Environment Day, observed annually on 5th June, is a stark reminder of the urgent environmental issues that demand our collective attention. It underscores humanity's pivotal role in preserving and nurturing the environment. From a Christian perspective, stewardship of the environment aligns with God’s mandate to humanity, emphasising responsibility, care, and sustainable practices.

The concept of environmental stewardship is not a modern idea, but one deeply rooted in the Bible. In Genesis, God grants humanity dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:26—28). This dominion is not a licence for exploitation but a call for responsible governance. Humanity is tasked with cultivating and keeping the garden (Genesis 2:15), implying a duty to maintain the earth’s health and productivity. This mandate underlines the need for sustainable practices that honour God's creation.

The Bible consistently acknowledges the earth as God's creation. "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein" (Psalm 24:1). This verse establishes the foundational truth that the environment is not ours to abuse but a gift from God to be cherished. Mismanagement of natural resources equates to a disregard for this divine gift. Christians, as custodians of the earth, are empowered with the significant role of preserving and nurturing this gift.

Practical stewardship involves adopting lifestyles and policies that protect and enhance the environment. This includes reducing waste, conserving water, and supporting renewable energy sources. For example, churches and Christian organisations can lead by example by implementing recycling programmes, using energy-efficient appliances, and advocating for sustainable practices within their communities. Additionally, engaging in reforestation projects or supporting sustainable agriculture are tangible ways to fulfil the stewardship mandate.

The church plays a pivotal role in promoting environmental stewardship. The church can influence individual behaviour and public policy by teaching and embodying principles of care for creation. Sermons, Bible studies, and church-led community projects can raise awareness and mobilise action. Moreover, churches can collaborate with environmental organisations to amplify their impact, demonstrating a united front in the fight against environmental degradation.

Environmental stewardship also encompasses addressing environmental injustice. Many communities suffer disproportionately from environmental degradation and climate change, particularly in developing countries. The Christian call to love one’s neighbour (Mark 12:31) extends to advocating for fair treatment and protection of these vulnerable populations. Supporting initiatives that provide clean water, sustainable agriculture, and pollution control in affected areas is a critical aspect of stewardship.

Christian eschatology offers a unique perspective on environmental care. While the Bible speaks of a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1), this future hope does not absolve humanity of its present responsibilities. Instead, it reinforces the need to steward the current creation with the expectation of a renewed creation. This perspective encourages proactive engagement in environmental conservation as a foretaste of the coming renewal.

World Environment Day is a significant reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve the environment. For Christians, this responsibility is deeply embedded in biblical teachings, calling for active stewardship that honours God’s creation. By embracing sustainable practices, advocating for environmental justice, and leveraging the church's influence, Christians can fulfil their divine mandate to steward the earth. In doing so, they protect the planet for future generations and glorify God, the Creator.
