Bearing Fruit: How to Live a Life Pleasing to God

Have you ever wondered how your actions affect your life? The Bible offers a gentle reminder through a story about trees and God's love...

Jun 10, 2024By Eby Lukas
In the Bible, John the Baptist shares a powerful message: “The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire” (Matthew 3:10). This verse uses the image of an axe and trees to teach an important lesson about our lives and actions.
The Meaning of the Axe
The axe in this verse stands for God's judgment. It shows that God is always watching over our lives and actions. The axe at the root of the trees means that God's judgment is severe and thorough, affecting the very base of who we are and what we do. This is not about random punishment but a careful look at whether our lives produce good or bad results.
Producing Good Fruit
In the Bible, trees and their fruits often represent our actions and the state of our hearts. Good fruit represents qualities like love, kindness, patience, and faithfulness. Bad fruit represents bad qualities like selfishness, anger, and dishonesty. John the Baptist’s message is a warning to look closely at our lives. Are we doing good things and showing love to others? Are our actions in line with what God wants?
Self-Examination: Take time to think about your actions and see if there are areas where you can improve.
Spiritual Practices: Activities like praying, reading the Bible, and meditating can help you grow spiritually.
Helping Others: Being involved in your community and helping those in need can lead to personal growth and good actions.
The Never-Rusted Axe in Modern Culture
Today, we live in a fast-paced world where values and priorities can sometimes become confused. The “Never-Rusted Axe” concept reminds us that God’s judgment is always present and never weakens. Unlike a real Axe that might rust and become useless over time, God’s judgment remains solid and constant. This means we should always work on our spiritual growth and try to be better people, even when modern culture pushes us towards selfishness and superficiality.
Social Media Pressure: Modern culture often values appearance and popularity over character. Remember that God cares more about your heart and actions than your online image.
Materialism: Society may push you to measure success by wealth and possessions. God’s judgment looks at the fruit of your life, not the stuff you own.
Instant Gratification: The world today often seeks quick fixes and immediate pleasure. Actual spiritual growth takes time and effort.
What Happens If We Ignore This?
The last part of the verse talks about trees that do not produce good fruit being cut down and thrown into the fire. This is a warning about what happens if we ignore our spiritual duties. It tells us to be active in our faith and not become lazy or complacent.
The verse uses the image of an axe at the root of trees to give a strong message about self-examination and spiritual alertness. The “Never-Rusted Axe” represents God’s constant judgment and the need for us to produce good fruit in our lives. By regularly reflecting on our actions, practising our faith, and striving to improve, we can ensure that our lives align with God’s will. Take this message to heart and work towards living fruitful and pleasing lives to God, even in today's challenging culture.
