Holy Tuesday: Teaching, Truth, and Tension

On Holy Tuesday, Jesus taught in the temple, challenged corrupt authority, exposed hypocrisy, and revealed the heart of true discipleship. His bold teachings remain a call to integrity, justice, and unwavering allegiance to God.

Holy Tuesday marks the third day of Passion Week, following Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. According to the Synoptic Gospels, this day is characterised by Jesus’ public teaching in the temple courts, where He engages in theological debate and moral instruction. As the religious centre of first-century Judaism, the temple becomes the backdrop for confrontation, clarification, and revelation (Matthew 21:23–27; Mark 11:27–33; Luke 20:1–8). This deliberate return to the temple reflects a conscious choice to challenge prevailing authority structures and offer a vision of the kingdom of God rooted in truth, not tradition.
Challenge to Religious Authority
Jesus was confronted by chief priests and elders questioning His authority. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked (Matthew 21:23). Rather than answer directly, Jesus posed a counter-question about John the Baptist’s ministry, exposing their fear of public opinion and lack of genuine spiritual conviction. This exchange highlighted the religious leaders’ prioritisation of control over truth. Jesus’ method reveals that true authority is not self-asserted but recognised through alignment with divine purpose and moral clarity. His challenge remains relevant when spiritual authority is misused to protect power rather than pursue justice.
Parables that Confront Hypocrisy
Following the challenge, Jesus delivered a series of parables: the Two Sons, the Tenants, and the Wedding Feast (Matthew 21:28–22:14). Each parable indicted the religious elite for their failure to recognise God’s messengers and their rejection of responsibility. For instance, the parable of the Tenants narrates a landlord whose servants—and eventually his son—are rejected and killed by the tenants. This story is an allegory of Israel’s history of dismissing prophets and the impending crucifixion. The clear moral: privilege without obedience results in judgment. These stories are not simply moral tales but prophetic critiques calling for repentance, not entitlement.
Teaching on Political and Spiritual Allegiance
When questioned about paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus responded with a balanced answer: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21). His statement subverted their trap, affirming legitimate civic responsibility while maintaining ultimate loyalty to God. In a pluralistic world where the line between faith and politics often blurs, this teaching calls for responsible engagement without idolatrous allegiance to the state or party.
Warning Against Religious Hypocrisy
Jesus also issued a series of woes against the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 23), condemning their legalism, pride, and spiritual blindness. He accused them of burdening others while neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23). These warnings urge self-examination among religious leaders and followers alike. Faith is not maintained through outward conformity but through inward transformation and ethical integrity.
Holy Tuesday is not merely a day in the Passion narrative. It highlights Jesus as a public teacher fearless in exposing hypocrisy and calling for repentance. His temple teachings confront religious pretence and affirm that spiritual authority must align with humility, justice, and truth.
